Brisbane 2032 and the major projects pipeline
Want a share of the major-project work? Get your paperwork ready before the tenders open.
Help for Redlands and Bayside trade businesses to become subcontractor-ready and tender-ready, from someone who has done it from the inside.
What head contractors and government buyers will ask you for
It isn't about being the biggest. It's about being able to hand over the right documents the day they're asked for. Most of these you can get in order now, before anyone asks.
- Current public liability, workers' compensation and other required insurances
- QBCC licence and any trade licences, current and matching your scope of work
- A written WH&S system: policies, safe work method statements, incident reporting, inductions
- Employee and subcontractor records, onboarding and Blue Cards where needed
- Up-to-date books and financial statements, and an ABN and GST position that's correct
- Quality and environmental policies, even simple ones, written down
- A capability statement: who you are, what you do, what you've done
- Somewhere all of this lives so you can send it in an hour, not a week
- Registered on Gateway by ICN, the Brisbane 2032 supplier portal, with a profile that is actually filled in
The Organising Committee runs its procurement through Gateway by ICN. Registering is free. Filling the profile in properly, with insurances, licences and a capability statement a buyer can check, is the part most businesses never get round to. That is in the Compliance and Systems Check.
Free to register. Takes about 20 minutes.
Busy is coming. Be set up for it.
Over the next few years South East Queensland will have more work than trades to do it. That's good news if you're ready: more jobs to choose from, and a good reason to grow. Growing means new starters, apprentices and subbies, and every one of them needs inducting, recording and keeping safe.
- Onboarding that gets a new starter on site in a day, not a week
- Inductions, white cards and licences on file and current
- A safety system that grows with your crew
- Quoting, invoicing and payment records that hold up on bigger jobs
Set up to stand on your own.
What I do
I go through your business against that list, tell you plainly where the gaps are, and then close them. Policies written, systems set up, records tidied, insurances and licences checked, capability statement drafted. When a tender or a prequalification request comes in, you're sending documents, not scrambling for them.
The way in is the Compliance and Systems Check, $490, written gap list.
Tender support
When a specific tender comes in, help getting the response together, properly and on time.
I'm not a tender writer by trade and I don't promise you'll win work. What I do is make sure you're never knocked out on paperwork, which is where most small businesses fall over.
I've done this from the inside
I ran a commercial carpentry contractor in the UK that worked on defence, prison and school sites. Every job came with compliance paperwork, and every head contractor checked it.
I also project managed the rescue of a derelict 1800s building in Saltash, Cornwall. Three storeys, empty for 25 years, in a conservation area. I ran the scope of works and the estimating, got it through council planning and conservation approval, sorted the rights of way, and coordinated architects, engineers, builders, roofers, plumbers and electricians, with health and safety covered from the first day on site to the fire certificate at the end. It's now an office and two homes.
Since then I've put WH&S systems in place for a range of businesses, from trade crews to community organisations, and managed grant applications and compliance for charities. The documents change. The discipline doesn't.
Free sessions for Redlands and Bayside businesses
I'm running short, free, plain-English sessions on what Games-related and government work will ask of a small business, and what to get in order now. No sales pitch in the room. If you want help afterwards, you know where I am.
Dates and venues to be announced. Register your interest and I'll let you know.
